Two key environmental variables modulated by regional meteorologic variation, lake residence time and thermal stability, predicted the timing of occurrence of community types each year with 75% accuracy, and each corresponded with different aspects of variation in community composition (orthogonal ordination axes). Thermal stratification was associated with the emergence of specific communities each summer and increased community heterogeneity throughout the water column. Bacterioplankton exhibited consistent phenological patterns, with distinct, interannually recurring community types characteristic of the spring snowmelt, ice-off and fall-overturn periods in the lake. This study quantified seasonal variation in the community composition of bacterioplankton in a high-elevation lake in the Sierra Nevada of California over a 3-year period of 2004–2006. Many eukaryotic communities exhibit predictable seasonality in species composition, but such phenological patterns are not well-documented in bacterial communities. (He's the rare author who can't complain about the adaptation making changes to his work, since he was responsible for the edits.) While the plot of Hellraiser follows the same basic outline as The Hellbound Heart, there are several changes, made all the more interesting by the fact that author Clive Barker also wrote the screenplay for the film version and directed it. It’s just one of the many differences between The Hellbound Heart and Hellraiser. Based on this character's lasting popularity in pop culture and starring role in the upcoming reboot of the franchise, you might think that Pinhead featured prominently in the book-but that’s not the case. It's one of the most arresting sights in the 1987 film adaptation of Clive Barker's 1986 novella, The Hellbound Heart. Pinhead is a tall, bald, pasty white being decked out in a long black leather getup, with what appear to be finish nails stuck all over his head. One of the most recognizable characters from horror films, and a wildly popular Halloween costume to boot, is The Hell Priest, better known as Pinhead, from Hellraiser. Inspired by visions and voices of angels, Joan led French troops to lift the siege of Orléans ensuring Charles VII was crowned King of France in 1429. Joan of Arc, a peasant girl in 15th century France, rose up to hold supreme command of the military forces of France at the age of seventeen. It occupies the loftiest place possible to human attainment. It can be measured against all time without misgiving. But the character of Joan of Arc is unique. Judged by the standards of today, there are not many from five or six centuries ago whose character stands the test of time. Judged by the standards of one century, the noblest characters of an earlier one lose much of their luster. The others needed no preparation and got none." -Mark Twain My best book is my Recollections of Joan of Arc.it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. She saw the fun and the joy that it could elicit and she accepted that she wanted to be a writer in her own right, regardless of what her older sister did in the long run. Over time, Kincaid came to own her writing habit. She thought writing was cool because her sister was doing it. Though, Kincaid will tell you that it took a while for her passion for writing to blossom into something real.ĭuring those earlier days, Kincaid simply wanted to follow in the footsteps of her sister. Even as a child, she spent many a waking hour jotting simple tales down and amazing her friends with her storytelling abilities. Kincaid is a pretty accomplished individual with multiple degrees from Illinois and Ohio universities, though her passion has always been writing. Kincaid was born in Alabama, California, though she eventually moved to New Hampshire where she attended high school. Kincaid is an American author that writes science fiction novels with a young adult spin to them. With archetypes from the lonely widow to the glamorous movie star present in the story, there were plenty of characters for me to get invested in and seeing how the characters drew together around their love for Austen was a meaningful part of the story. The book has a calm feel over all I liked how the characters were allowed the space to be introduced, leave the story, and then reappear in connections to one another. Jenner’s book opens with chapters introducing each of the central characters, setting up relationships between the members of the small town of Chawton and quietly revealing how their past traumas have shaped their relationships to each other. Sprinkled with quotes from Austen’s works, this charming story takes a fictional look at the legacy of one of England’s best known authors. With Austen’s family estate crumbling, the group decides that it is their duty to preserve what they can of their beloved author’s home and share the joy of her work with others. In Natalie Jenner’s debut novel, The Jane Austen Society, a group including a film star, her wealthy fiance, a country doctor, and a farm boy all are drawn together to preserve Austen’s legacy and home. Not much is known about Austen’s personal life, since her family destroyed many of her letters and personal items after her death. It must have created a deep impression on the young Ian Fleming because when, forty years later, he decided that he would write a story for his small son Caspar about a car that could fly, he described a magnificent green car with 'rows and rows of gleaming knobs on the dashboard', 'a cream-coloured collapsible roof' and huge exhaust pipes of 'glistening silver'. Ian Fleming was born in 1908 and died in 1964. It belonged to an eccentric racing driver called Count Louis Zborowski. When he was still a boy at school he had been to visit a house in Kent where there was a very fast and very noisy racing car. Ian Fleming had a passion for cars, and in the James Bond books he wrote wonderful descriptions of cars such as a Bentley Continental and an Aston Martin.
